The medieval town of Pedraza, located in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains about 90 minutes from Madrid, is accessible only through a single gate measuring three metres wide and three-and-a-half metres tall. For centuries, the heavy wooden doors were locked at night, with only emergency exits permitted. Today, the town experiences traffic bottlenecks on weekends due to the narrow entrance, but visitors are advised to hire a compact car or take a bus tour to avoid losing a wing mirror on the black wooden doors.
Exploring Pedraza's Timeless Streets
Once inside, cobbled streets designed for horse and cart wind through the settlement. Stone buildings with red roofs create a classic Spanish atmosphere. The population has dwindled to a few hundred residents, though artists, nobles, and royals have lived here historically. Key sites include Castillo de Pedraza, a 13th-century castle once owned by a Spanish painter; Jail Villa, the old town jail; and Casa del Aguila Imperial, a museum and wildlife centre focusing on the surrounding unspoilt nature.

One of the most popular times to visit is during the Concierto de las Velas, held annually on July 4 and 11 in 2026. Thousands of candles illuminate the streets, and outdoor classical music concerts take place in stunning locations. Entrance is limited to ticket holders during this event.
