Thorpe Park Closes Amity Beach After 35 Years for New Thrillseeker Recharge Zone
Thorpe Park Closes Amity Beach for New Recharge Zone

Thorpe Park has confirmed the permanent closure of Amity Beach, a cherished outdoor water attraction that has delighted families for 35 years. The seasonal spot, known for its artificial sandy shores, fountains, paddling pool, and four-lane water slide, will not reopen for the 2026 season. In its place, the theme park is introducing a brand-new recharge zone named The Launchpad, designed to provide thrillseekers with a space to rest and refuel between adrenaline-pumping rides.

End of an Era for Amity Beach

Opened in 1991, Amity Beach has long been a popular destination for cooling down during hot summer days, attracting countless visitors over the decades. The attraction featured the exhilarating Depth Charge waterslide, which offered thrilling dinghy rides, though its future remains uncertain as it does not appear in concept art for the new area. Thorpe Park recently shared nostalgic photos highlighting Amity Beach's rich history, including visits from high-profile figures such as Princess Diana and Prince Harry in the 1990s.

The Launchpad: A New Chapter

In a social media announcement, Thorpe Park revealed concept art for The Launchpad, describing it as an open-plan space with colourful rubber flooring, seating areas, shaded spots, kiosks, flower boxes, and planted trees. The park stated, "We're thrilled to share a first look at the concept art for The Launchpad! As we say goodbye to Amity Beach and get ready for this next exciting chapter, we’re proud to reveal what’s coming next!" The Launchpad aims to address the need for visitors to recharge between rides, aligning with Thorpe Park's identity as the UK's Most Thrilling Theme Park.

Historical Significance and Events

Amity Beach hosted various themed events over the years, such as Love Island Lates, where fans could meet cast members from the show. Its closure marks the end of an iconic era, but Thorpe Park emphasizes the transition as part of an evolving visitor experience. The park's decision reflects a shift towards enhancing amenities for thrillseekers, while acknowledging the sentimental value of the old attraction.

Contrast with Other Attractions

Meanwhile, in Blackpool, a separate children's attraction has also closed recently. Peter Rabbit Explore and Play, a £1 million venture by Merlin Entertainments, shut down after just three years of operation. Based on the beloved Peter Rabbit animated series, this interactive experience offered a 45-minute adventure through themed zones but closed in November 2025 and has not reopened. This highlights the challenges faced by family attractions in the current market, contrasting with Thorpe Park's strategic reinvestment in new facilities.
