According to travel trade association ABTA, 64% of Britons plan to take a foreign holiday this year, but a third will book it just two to four weeks before departure. TUI travel expert Stephanie Lipsombe, with 27 years of experience, warns that last-minute bookers often make five critical mistakes.
Date Mix-Ups and Wrong Trip Lengths
Stephanie Lipsombe notes that under time pressure, customers frequently select wrong dates, misunderstand trip duration, or enter names incorrectly. These oversights can incur fees to fix, depending on how close to departure and the booking conditions. She advises spending an extra five minutes double-checking details or enlisting a second pair of eyes, such as a travel agent.
Passport and Visa Panic
Many travellers assume their documents are valid, only to discover later that passports lack required months of validity. Lipsombe recommends checking passport and visa requirements first, not as an afterthought.
Payment Terms Shock
Last-minute bookings typically require full payment upfront, unlike the small deposits many expect. Customers often fail to check terms, leading to unexpected budget pressure when they must pay the full balance immediately.
Assuming Last-Minute Always Means Cheaper
Lipsombe says this is a common myth. While deals exist, last-minute booking limits time to compare options, narrowing choices and reducing confidence in getting the right holiday. She advises prioritising the best fit for the traveller over the lowest price.
Overlooking Travel Insurance
In the rush to secure a deal, essentials like travel insurance are often forgotten. Without it, missed flights, lost gadgets, or medical issues can lead to significant costs. TUI offers a “Last-Minute, Holiday Check It” service at local stores until July 18, 2026, with a prize draw for a £2,000 gift card for those who book and attend an appointment.
