Sydney Easter Show Faces Backlash Over Crowds and Costs
The Sydney Royal Easter Show, which commenced at Sydney Olympic Park on Thursday, has already sparked significant discontent among visitors. Many families have voiced their frustration, citing a combination of high prices, severe overcrowding, and technical failures that have marred the annual event. The show, running until Monday, April 13, is expected to attract over 850,000 attendees, but early reports suggest a less-than-ideal experience for many.
Overcrowding and Price Complaints Dominate Feedback
Visitors have taken to social media platforms like Reddit to express their dismay. One user highlighted the overwhelming crowds, stating, "It's so overcrowded. Took all the fun out of the venues, completely overpriced for all things like strawberries and chocolate were insane." Another echoed this sentiment, criticizing the management of attendee numbers and the cost of games, which required excessive credits. Families revealed spending more than $500 in a single day, leading to questions about the event's value. A Reddit user remarked, "I don't understand why people go every year when every year it's overpriced and underwhelming." Many reminisced about the show's past, with one commenter noting, "It's not like it was when we were kids in the 90s/early 2000s such a shame!!"
Technical Glitches Add to the Frustration
A significant technical failure on the first day exacerbated the situation. The Carnival Fun Pass app, designed for purchasing ride credits, malfunctioned, leaving families unable to access attractions. Stevielea Abberton shared her disappointing experience on TikTok, explaining that her family could not use the $600 they had preloaded for rides. She described the day as "ridiculous," with ride systems down and long, stagnant lines. "We ended up leaving… completely disappointed," she added. Another mother criticized organizers for suggesting a weeks-long wait for refunds, emphasizing the additional $45 per person cost on top of entry fees. She urged a return to traditional ticketing systems, stating, "If you can't keep up with technology, go back to the old ticketing system and do better."
Organizer Response and Ongoing Issues
The Royal Agricultural Society, which organizes the event, acknowledged the technical issues in a statement. A spokesperson said, "We are aware of an issue with the Carnival Fun Pass and its associated app that's preventing showgoers from using it to get on some rides in the carnival area. We are working to fix the issue as quickly as possible and apologise to our valued patrons for the inconvenience caused." Despite this apology, the combination of problems has ignited a broader debate among Australians about whether the Easter Show has lost its original charm. Comments on social media reflect a sense of disillusionment, with one user writing, "I don't understand why they can't make it more enjoyable instead of just making it a money grab." Another added, "Everything is about spending more, not having fun." The Daily Mail has reached out to the Sydney Easter Show for further comment as the event continues.
