Sweden Invites Brits to Adopt Remote Islands for a Year of Solitude
Sweden Offers Brits Chance to Adopt Remote Islands for a Year

Have you ever fantasised about owning your very own private island? Perhaps adopting one instead? Sweden is now extending a remarkable invitation to British travellers, offering the chance to adopt an island in the Scandinavian nation and take it under their protective wing. With over 267,000 islands – more than any other country globally – Sweden is presenting a unique opportunity for UK residents to become custodians of one of five pristine, untouched islands.

The 'Your Swedish Island' Initiative

Launched by Visit Sweden in collaboration with the National Property Board, which oversees state-owned cultural heritage properties, the 'Your Swedish Island' programme encourages travellers to apply for the privilege of adopting an island. This initiative is not about purchasing property but about stewardship – visiting and caring for these secluded natural havens.

Each of the five selected islands is remote yet conveniently close to local communities for essential needs. Whether it's picking up groceries, posting a letter, or participating in traditional Midsummer celebrations, winners will find a balance between isolation and accessibility.

What Winners Receive

Successful applicants will be granted a one-year right to use one of the chosen islands. The package includes a diploma certifying the winner as an official island custodian, a trip to Sweden, and a contract outlining basic stewardship responsibilities. This aligns perfectly with current trends, as for many Brits, escaping to a private island represents the ultimate dream, symbolising more than mere luxury – it's about peace and connection with nature.

Growing Appeal of Solitude

A recent YouGov survey highlights this shift in preferences, revealing that seven in ten Brits would eagerly embrace the opportunity to escape crowds. The appeal of peaceful, remote destinations is on the rise, driven by various motivations for solitude.

In the UK, 15 percent of respondents expressed a desire to get away from their bosses, while avoiding crowded public transport is another key factor. The survey also indicates that Brits, like people worldwide, are increasingly drawn to simplicity and natural environments. Consequently, travellers are turning to serene locations such as Sweden's islands as an antidote to overcrowding and overtourism.

Official Statements

Susanne Andersson, CEO at Visit Sweden, commented: 'Sweden boasts more islands than any other country in the world. We invite people to experience what may be the most genuine form of luxury: the peace and tranquillity of nature on your own island.'

She added: 'Your Swedish Island offers quality-of-life experiences that resonate deeply with global travellers. While private islands have long been seen as the pinnacle of luxury, this initiative aims to democratise that experience. If you don't secure one of these five islands, don't worry – Sweden has countless more for everyone to enjoy.'

Application Details

Applications open for international travellers on February 17, 2026, and will be accepted until April 17, 2026. A jury will select five successful applicants based on creativity and personal motivation, ensuring that the islands go to those who truly value and will care for them.

For travel enthusiasts, Sweden's diverse and abundant island landscape offers something for every interpretation of 'getting away,' making this initiative a compelling opportunity to explore solitude and stewardship in one of the world's most picturesque settings.
