A pumpkin patch in Barton Mills, Suffolk, has been dubbed 'depressing and bleak' by visitors, who have compared it to the infamous Willy Wonka experience in Glasgow. The Halloween-themed event, advertised as the 'perfect family pumpkin patch', has faced backlash within days of opening, with one visitor describing it as 'a load of Tesco pumpkins in a field'.
The patch is part of a larger attraction featuring fairground rides and food and drink vans. Alex Dodman, who visited with his family, shared videos on TikTok showing sparsely scattered pumpkins, some smashed on the grass, alongside 'questionable decor'. The area is enclosed by an unattractive metal fence, which Dodman said gave the whole thing 'Glasgow Willy Wonka vibes'.
Visitor's Experience and Costs
Dodman's video tour included food stalls, fairground rides, and the pumpkin patch itself, which requires tickets. He noted the entry fee was just under £20 for a family of five, but pointed out that was 'minus any buying of pumpkins'. Initially thinking the fee reasonable, he later reflected: 'So when I think about it, I've just paid £19.52 to walk into a field with sparsely scattered pumpkins, questionable Halloween decor... and all surrounded by a metal fence.'
The tour also showcased mini golf stations, photo backdrops, and Halloween figures, including an unnerving tiger on a crate. Despite the criticisms, Dodman praised the staff, saying: 'I can't even knock who's decided to put this place on. The people who worked here were actually great.' He added: 'To be honest, I don't blame the organisers or the vendors. It goes deeper than that.'
Organisers Respond to Criticism
The event's organisers have responded on social media, saying they are battling rising costs and are 'pleased' with their event, adding they are 'only human' and have received mainly positive reviews. In a post about people smashing pumpkins, they wrote: 'We know that days out can be expensive for families, and as a family ourselves, we completely understand that. We try so hard to make our pumpkin patch a lovely, affordable experience that everyone can enjoy. But unfortunately, we still have bills to pay, pumpkins to replace, displays to maintain and a business to keep running.'
They also addressed the entry fee, explaining they have been targeted by vandals. The post read: 'Every morning, after a busy day welcoming families to our patch, we are faced with the heartbreaking sight of more and more pumpkins deliberately smashed, damaged displays and unnecessary mess left behind.' They stressed it is a family-run business, adding: 'We aren't a big company with endless amounts of money.'
Comparison to Glasgow Willy Wonka Event
The experience has been likened to the Willy Wonka event in Glasgow in 2024, where visitors found a poorly decorated warehouse instead of the advertised giant sweets, chocolate fountains, and Oompa-Loompas. Suffolk Pumpkin Patch has said anyone seen deliberately smashing pumpkins or damaging displays will be asked to pay for the damage and leave the site. They concluded: 'To some people, it might be 'just a pumpkin', but to us, it's our livelihood, our hard work and our family's business. To everyone who visits, supports us and treats our patch with respect, we really cannot thank you enough. You are the reason we keep doing what we do.'
