St Fagans National Museum of History in Cardiff has been named the greatest free day out in the country by consumer comparison company Which?, which also praised it as one of the best museums in the UK.
The open-air museum is ranked 15th in Time Out's '20 best museums in the UK in 2026' and received a 94% score from Which? for its reconstructed historic street and traditional craft demonstrations.
What makes St Fagans stand out
Which? said: "This open-air museum has a reconstructed historic street as well as demonstrations of traditional crafts such as blacksmiths and clog-making. Farm animals and the large play area will be popular with children."
The 120-acre site is best known for its Iron Age roundhouse, saddler's workshop and row of miners' cottages that showcase the lives of people throughout Welsh history.
A new addition in 2024
In 2024, the museum opened the Vulcan Hotel, a pub that originally stood on Adam Street in Adamsdown from 1853. It closed in 2012 and was scheduled for demolition, but after a campaign to save it, the owners handed it over to Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales.
The building was dismantled brick by brick and rebuilt at St Fagans, where it now operates as a functioning pub.
Events throughout the year
Beyond its historical exhibits, the museum hosts regular events including food festivals, makers markets and seasonal activities. During the Halloween season, it offers after-dark, family-friendly events and guided ghost tours for older children and adults.
