A British expat living in Benidorm has issued a warning to holidaymakers about a scam involving people with clipboards approaching tourists along the beachfront. Frank, who moved to the Costa Blanca city 13 years ago and runs party services as 'The Stag Man', shared the alert on TikTok on 10 June.
In the video, Frank pointed out individuals asking passers-by to sign petitions. He explained that after signing, tourists are pressurised into making a donation. His partner added that the scammers often claim the petition is for the blind or disabled, but described it as 'full of a load of rubbish and illegal to do here in Spain'.
Frank warned that the fraudsters are 'illegal, scamming, and they will take your money', adding that some people have even taken out their wallets to give cash. Several TikTok users responded, reporting similar experiences. One said her husband fell for it in the Old Town, another recalled being scammed with a 'potato game' three years ago, and a fourth claimed they were asked for €10 and faced rudeness when refusing.
In a separate video last week, Frank highlighted another common scam where thieves ask tourists to search for a location on Google Maps, then snatch the phone and run off. He urged visitors to be cautious when approached by strangers asking for help with directions.
Benidorm remains a popular destination for British tourists, with Travel Republic data showing that Britons accounted for 45% of overnight stays in 2024, totalling over 600,000 visitors. The city is home to 32 British pubs and is known for low beer prices.
