British tourists are increasingly flocking to Bulgaria, with Sozopol emerging as a budget-friendly alternative to Italy’s Amalfi Coast, according to travel experts. Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital and engagement at Eurochange, noted a significant rise in UK visitors to the Bulgarian coast, highlighting Sozopol as a ‘dupe’ for the famous Italian Riviera.
“Sozopol’s old town is dotted with quaint wooden houses and cobbled streets that overlook the stunning coastline and bright blue waters,” Evans-Fisk said. She added that despite Bulgaria joining the euro, prices for food, accommodation, and drinks remain low compared to Greece, Spain, and Italy. A beer costs under €2 (£1.7), and a meal around €10 (£8.7).
Sozopol, one of Bulgaria’s most ancient coastal towns, offers Kavastie and Harmani beaches, along with numerous beach bars. Visitors can also explore historic churches, Ravadinovo Castle, the Sozopol Archaeological Museum, or Aquapark Neptun. A recent Tripadvisor reviewer described Kavastie Beach as “fantastic” and “extremely clean,” while another praised Ravadinovo Castle as “a place of wonder.”
With its similar aesthetic to Positano and Cinque Terre but at a fraction of the cost, Sozopol provides a less crowded, affordable escape for British holidaymakers seeking stunning coastal scenery.
