A Polish influencer has described being overwhelmed by unwanted attention from men during a solo trip to Marrakesh, Morocco. Karolina Wachowicz, 35, said she felt like a 'neon sign' as a blonde single woman walking the streets, facing constant comments, marriage proposals, and pressure for her contact details.
Wachowicz, originally from Krakow, told What's The Jam: 'As a blonde, single European woman, you are not seen as just another traveller, you become the spectacle. Every glance, every comment, every offer of help is loaded with meaning you never asked for.' She said the attention intensified when she visited smaller towns and rural villages, making simple acts like sitting in a café or crossing the street challenging.
The travel influencer warned other solo female travellers to wear appropriate clothing and develop a thick skin. In Morocco, women are advised to cover their shoulders and legs. Wachowicz noted that any visible skin or uncovered hair can be interpreted as a statement, leading to relentless requests, proposals, or questions.
Despite the exhausting experiences, she said Morocco can be enjoyed if visitors understand the different social codes. 'Morocco can challenge and exhaust you, but it will also teach you resilience, flexibility, and the importance of cross-cultural kindness, if you're willing to look beneath the sometimes exasperating surface,' she added.
