Ski Resort Chaos: Avalanche Warnings and Crowds Cause Delays

European Ski Resorts Descend into Chaos Amid Half-Term Rush and Avalanche Crisis

Half-term holidays have unleashed chaos across ski resorts in Europe, with viral video footage revealing enormous queues forming at lift stations. This disruption is exacerbated by severe avalanche warnings, creating a perfect storm of delays and safety concerns for tourists.

Massive Crowds and Hour-Long Waits Reported

Social media videos from Crans-Montana in Switzerland show large groups of people gathered around ski lifts, with one user reporting a wait time of one hour. Similarly, footage from the Cauterets ski resort in France depicts a seemingly endless, winding queue up the mountain, with hundreds of skiers stranded. These scenes are partly attributed to the influx of alpinists during school holidays, but avalanche warnings have significantly worsened the situation.

Avalanche Warnings Reach Maximum Levels

Currently, parts of Switzerland and France are under a 5/5 avalanche risk warning—the highest level, which is very rarely issued. In Austria, popular destinations like St. Anton have seen massive crowds waiting at the Nassereinbahn cable car due to delays caused by a level 4 avalanche warning. This escalation in avalanche danger is linked to Europe's ongoing crisis, which has resulted in 86 deaths this season, including at least four Britons, as severe snowfall and unstable mountain conditions plague the region.

Fatalities and National Toll Across Europe

The avalanche crisis has claimed lives across multiple countries. France has recorded the highest death toll with 25 fatalities, followed by Italy with 21 and Austria with 14. Switzerland has lost nine people, Spain eight, Slovakia four, Slovenia three, and Andorra one. The vast majority of victims were caught in wind slab avalanches or collapses related to persistent weak layers within the snow, often triggered by fresh snowfall. Most incidents occurred off-piste or in backcountry terrain, with others involving mountaineering, climbing, or hiking.

Recent Tragedies Involving British Nationals

Recent weeks have seen multiple tragedies involving British skiers. On Tuesday, a British man died in the Alps after an avalanche hit a group of five off-piste skiers and their guide near La Grave, France. Two skiers were found in cardiorespiratory arrest and later pronounced dead, including a Polish-born British national living in Switzerland. This follows another incident in Val d'Isere, France, where two Britons—Stuart Leslie, 46, and Shaun Overy, 51—were killed alongside a French national in an avalanche on Friday. Emergency services responded quickly but could not save their lives, despite all victims having avalanche transceivers.

Italy's Mounting Crisis and Evacuations

In Italy, the situation is dire, with two skiers dying over the weekend in an off-trail avalanche near Courmayeur. At least three skiers were caught in Sunday morning's avalanche on the Mont Blanc massif. Alpine Rescue reported a record 13 backcountry deaths in the first week of February, including 10 from avalanches triggered by an exceptionally unstable snowpack. Beginning this week, severe snowfall across Switzerland and northern Italy has forced authorities to evacuate villages and shut down areas. For instance, Rochemolles in Italy's Piedmont region was evacuated due to extreme snowfall and avalanche risks, with up to 40 centimetres of fresh snow increasing dangers.

Ongoing Challenges and Safety Concerns

The combination of half-term crowds and escalating avalanche warnings has created unprecedented challenges for European ski resorts. Tourists are facing not only long delays but also heightened risks, as authorities struggle to manage evacuations and safety protocols. With the season ongoing, the focus remains on mitigating further tragedies and ensuring public awareness of the dangers posed by unstable snow conditions.
