Lynmouth in Devon, often referred to as 'Little Switzerland', is a hidden gem nestled along the north Devon coast near Exmoor. This idyllic village offers stunning scenery and a perfect getaway for families seeking a UK-based holiday. A recent visit by a Bristol Live reporter highlighted its appeal, from panoramic sea views to family-friendly amenities.
The reporter stayed at Tors Park, a holiday village with 36 self-catered apartments. The two-bedroom Ocean Terrace apartment was described as spacious, spotless, and modern, with a well-equipped kitchen and a Nespresso machine. The true highlight was the panoramic views across Lynmouth Harbour, featuring two balconies and a large terrace with comfortable outdoor furniture.
Activities included a ride on the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, one of the oldest and steepest water-powered railways, which mesmerised young children. The group also walked to the Valley of the Rocks, a valley parallel to the sea known for its feral goats, and spotted several goats, much to the delight of the children.
On the third day, they walked to Watersmeet House, a former fishing lodge built in 1832 that now serves cream teas. The two-mile walk through a dramatic river gorge and ancient woodland took about 1.3 hours each way at a gentle pace. The house, managed by the National Trust, offered above-average quality food, including an iced latte and raspberry and ginger scone.
The holiday was described as easy and stress-free, with everything within walking distance.
