The West Highland Line, which runs from Glasgow to Mallaig, has been recognised as one of the world's most scenic winter train routes. The 5.5-hour journey passes through Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, over viaducts and past stations that have featured in films such as Trainspotting and Harry Potter.
A recent report highlights the line's dramatic landscapes, including mirrored lochs, glens filled with Scots pine, and snowy peaks. The route climbs to 408 metres at Corrour, the UK's highest station, where the film Trainspotting was partly set. Travellers are advised that winter daylight is short, with the sun setting as early as 16:07.
Passengers have described the journey as 'the most beautiful' they have experienced, despite occasional disruptions such as families with children and dogs. The line offers a glimpse of remote Scotland, from the industrial outskirts of Glasgow to the wild western interior, with wildlife including red deer stags visible near Rannoch station.
