Storm Boelo: Floods and trees block Manchester rail lines

Rail services in and out of Greater Manchester are severely disrupted tonight after floods and fallen trees blocked lines. The disruption follows Storm Boelo, which brought heavy rain and strong gusts of wind to the region throughout the day, affecting both train and tram services.

Three Incidents Cause Widespread Delays

At around 8pm, three separate incidents are causing delays across the network. Damage to the overhead electric wires between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport has blocked the line, leading to delays and cancellations.

Flooding between Wigan North Western and Liverpool Lime Street has also blocked the line, with services between those two stations cancelled or delayed. Additionally, a train struck a tree in the Warrington area, meaning trains cannot run between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Oxford Road in either direction.

Flood Warnings and Weather Alert

Three flood warnings are in place across the region, covering Lostock, Astley Bridge and Ashton in Makerfield. Parts of Greater Manchester are also covered by a Met Office yellow warning for rain, in effect from 11am until 11pm.
