WorldAtlas has crowned Scotland's "prettiest small towns," releasing a list of 10 picturesque settlements on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. The destinations range from the Scottish Borders to the Inner Hebrides.
Wigtown: Scotland's National Book Town
Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway, located around seven miles from Newton Stewart on the Machars peninsula, is one of the towns named. The former royal burgh features numerous cafes, independent shops, and walking trails with views of the Galloway Hills and Wigtown Bay. Known as 'Scotland’s National Book Town,' books outnumber residents by 250-to-one. The town hosts the popular Wigtown Book Festival each autumn.
WorldAtlas stated: "In the far southwest, on a low rise above the Cree estuary, Wigtown has reinvented itself as Scotland's National Book Town, its wide streets now lined with more than a dozen bookshops. Named Scotland's book town in 1998, it revived a market town that had fallen on hard times, and each autumn the ten-day Wigtown Book Festival fills its halls and gardens with readers and writers."
Dunkeld: Gateway to the Highlands
Dunkeld in Perthshire, previously named the country's "best place to live," is another town on the list. Known for Dunkeld Cathedral and scenic walks, the town also offers food and drink venues such as ARAN bakery and Z’s Bistro and Terrace Garden. Just outside Dunkeld lies The Hermitage, an 18th-century forest stretch created for the Dukes of Atholl.
The experts said: "Where the River Tay slips out of the Highlands, Dunkeld gathers on the north bank around its part-ruined cathedral, a town of about 1,200 long known as the gateway to the Highlands. Dunkeld Cathedral stands half in ruin and half in use, its choir still serving as the parish church, on a green beside the river where St Columba's relics were once enshrined. A short way upriver, The Hermitage frames a folly above the plunging Black Linn Falls amid some of Britain's tallest Douglas firs. The Loch of the Lowes reserve nearby offers a hide for watching nesting ospreys."
Portree: Isle of Skye's Capital
Portree on the Isle of Skye is recognized for its picturesque harbour, pastel-coloured buildings, and vibrant food scene. WorldAtlas praised the historic Isle of Skye Highland Games held each August, as well as sea eagle and seal-spotting boat trips and the Scorrybreac coastal path. The town features shops like Skye Batiks and Skyeskyns Portree.
Other Prettiest Small Towns
Other locations on the list include Melrose in the Scottish Borders, noted for Melrose Abbey and the Trimontium Museum, and Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, praised for its colourful painted harbour-front. The remaining towns are Plockton, Culross, Inveraray, Ballater, and Crail.
