Iraola faces Gravenberch dilemma as Liverpool host Brighton

Liverpool will look to extend their winning run to four matches when Brighton visit Anfield on Sunday afternoon, with head coach Andoni Iraola facing several selection decisions after a busy week.

The Reds secured a third successive triumph by coming from behind to beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. That followed a European victory at LASK and the 2-1 Premier League win at Brentford, setting up the second of four consecutive home matches against in-form Brighton.

Defensive reshuffle on the cards

Iraola is expected to rotate his resources again, with Liverpool playing the fifth of nine games in 29 days. Alisson Becker remains first choice in goal ahead of Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman.

At left-back, Kostas Tsimikas has provided assists in his last two Champions League starts, while Milos Kerkez had a difficult afternoon at Brentford. On the right, Jeremie Frimpong has joined Conor Bradley on the sidelines. Ronald Araujo has started the last two games at right-back but was substituted at half-time on both occasions for tactical reasons, while Ryan Gravenberch impressed there in the second half against Villarreal. Joe Gomez is another option.

Both Gomez and Araujo can also play centre-back, although captain Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet are now the established pairing. Giovanni Leoni is expected back in training during next month's international break.

Gravenberch's role in question

Trey Nyoni impressed alongside Alexis Mac Allister in a deeper midfield role against Villarreal, but Ryan Gravenberch's return from a Premier League suspension gives Iraola a difficult decision. Gravenberch started in the number 10 role in midweek but is expected to give way there for Florian Wirtz, who had a good cameo in the second half. The Netherlands international could instead reprise his right-back appearance.

Dominik Szoboszlai has aggravated a hamstring injury, while Wataru Endo, ineligible for the Champions League, has not played a minute this season. James McConnell came off the bench late against Villarreal and is another option.

Attack options plentiful

With Hugo Ekitike still recovering from a long-term Achilles problem, Iraola has plenty of attacking options. Victor Munoz remains a concern after missing the Villarreal game, having scored at Brentford three days earlier.

Bradley Barcola and Alexander Isak were both benched in midweek and are expected to return down the left and through the centre respectively. Barcola could face competition from Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha, although the latter has become more of a fixture on the right. Lewis Koumas has started three of the last four games down the middle, while Federico Chiesa, like Endo not in the Champions League squad for the first stage, has made just one brief substitute appearance this season.
