Four Scottish locations have been named among the UK's most picturesque towns and villages in a new list from travel experts WorldAtlas. The roundup of 11 destinations was published on Sunday, October 11.
Orkney village praised for heritage and beaches
St Margaret's Hope in the Orkney Islands is one of the largest settlements in the island chain, situated on the island of South Ronaldsay with a population of around 550. The village has a hotel, restaurant, coffee shop, bar, church, primary school and medical centre.
WorldAtlas highlighted the Smiddy Museum and the Workshop and Loft Gallery as popular attractions. The experts wrote: "Venturing to the island of South Ronaldsay, St Margaret's Hope makes a wonderful launchpad for exploring the southern reaches of Scotland's Orkney Islands. In town, the Smiddy Museum is a fully restored blacksmith's house and workshop that offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's crafty heritage.
"To see what locals are making these days, the Workshop and Loft Gallery is nearby and showcases high-quality, locally made knitwear, including cardigans, hats, and mitts. Some of that knitwear may come in very handy when heading out to the nearby Sands of Wright, a beautifully bucolic beach that's picture-perfect for serene shore walks."
Highland town and Ayrshire resort featured
Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands, located within the Cairngorms National Park, is also on the list. The town is a popular tourist resort with easy access to stunning natural scenery, including Rothiemurchus and the Craigellachie National Nature Reserve.
WorldAtlas described Aviemore as "an incredible destination for anyone craving exhilarating adventures in the Scottish Highlands," noting Cairn Gorm for hikes and bikes, Rothiemurchus for activities like archery, canoeing and paddleboarding, and Craigellachie for spotting peregrine falcons, rare butterflies and moths.
Troon in South Ayrshire, a seaside resort and sea port known for coastal scenery and sandy beaches, was praised for its scenic 18-hole championship course and seafood venues.
Shetland village completes the list
The fourth Scottish location is Haroldswick in the Shetland Islands, also known as Harold's Wick. The small village on the island of Unst is home to the Da Otters Neuk coffee shop and the Unst Boat Haven maritime museum.
