Scotland's 'Halloweentown' village Culross untouched for centuries

With Halloween just days away, the historic Fife village of Culross has been dubbed "Scotland's Halloweentown" by the National Trust for Scotland, offering a picturesque seaside day out that feels frozen in time. The former royal burgh, described as Scotland's most complete example of a 17th-century town, features cobbled causeways and colourful buildings that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Outlander Fans Will Recognise Culross

Fans of the historical drama series Outlander will recognise Culross, which portrayed the fictional village of Cranesmuir in the show. Landmarks such as the square at the Mercat Cross appear in various scenes, along with Culross Palace and Culross West Kirk.

The National Trust for Scotland wrote: "Is this Scotland's Halloweentown? Culross, Fife, is one of the prettiest places in Scotland! This picturesque wee village's appearance has remained largely unchanged in the last three hundred years or so—which is why you've seen it on screen so much! Outlander was shot here, with the historic burgh playing the part of Cranesmuir, the village around Castle Leoch."

Spooky Sights and Historic Highlights

For those seeking a spooky experience, the ruins of Culross Abbey top the list. Dating back to the 13th century, the former Cistercian abbey is free to visit throughout the year. It is supposedly home to a tunnel where a mysterious man on a golden chair will give treasure to anyone who finds him.

Culross Palace, dating to the late-16th century, is another attraction with original painted woodwork and a reconstructed kitchen garden. The palace is open to the public for exploration at one's own pace.

Where to Eat After Exploring

After touring the village, visitors can head to the Red Lion Inn for a hearty meal in cosy surroundings. The pub serves a classic menu with seafood options, including freshly battered haddock and chips, honey roast pork sausages, wholetail breaded scampi, and various burgers, alongside a selection of real ales.
