New data from VisitScotland shows that visitor numbers in the first half of the year have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with a 12% increase compared to the same period in 2019. The surge is attributed to extreme heat in popular Mediterranean destinations, prompting travelers to seek cooler climates.
The Tartan Army, Scotland's football supporters, have also been highlighted as a key driver, with major tournaments and events attracting fans from across the globe.
Impact on local economy
The influx has boosted local businesses, with hotels, restaurants, and tour operators reporting strong bookings. VisitScotland's chief executive, Malcolm Roughead, said the 'unprecedented interest' is a 'huge opportunity' for the country's tourism sector.
However, the rise in visitors has also raised concerns about overtourism in popular spots like Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye, prompting calls for sustainable management.
