Royal Caribbean Announces Groundbreaking Discovery Class Fleet
Royal Caribbean has revealed plans for a new Discovery class of cruise ships, set to launch from 2029, marking a significant expansion beyond its existing Icon range. The cruise line has secured an agreement with the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire for two confirmed vessels, with options for an additional four, promising to transform how guests explore the world.
Innovative Design and Guest-Centric Experiences
Michael Bayley, president and chief executive of Royal Caribbean, emphasised that the Discovery class will place guests at the heart of the experience. "The Discovery class introduces a bold new concept that puts our guests at the centre of it all," he stated. "It will deliver extraordinary, one-of-a-kind experiences — from cutting edge design to immersive moments — every detail crafted to surprise and delight guests in ways they’ve never imagined, all while visiting truly breathtaking destinations around the world."
While specific details on size and capacity remain undisclosed, the first ship is scheduled to debut in 2029, followed by a second in 2032. This move comes as Royal Caribbean continues to develop its Icon class, which includes the world's largest cruise ships, with Legend of the Seas joining Icon and Star this summer.
Strengthening Shipyard Partnerships
The collaboration with Chantiers de l'Atlantique builds on a long-standing relationship, with the shipyard having constructed 21 ships for Royal Caribbean Group over the past four decades. Laurent Castaing, chief executive of CdA, commented, "Together, we are shaping a new generation of ocean vacations that will lead the industry toward a more innovative future." Currently, CdA is also working on two additional vessels, including the seventh Oasis class ship and Celebrity Xcite.
In parallel, Royal Caribbean is advancing its Icon class with a fourth ship in development at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, slated for launch in 2027. The first steel cut for a fifth Icon class vessel occurred recently, with options in place for a sixth and seventh, underscoring the brand's commitment to fleet expansion and innovation.
This strategic initiative highlights Royal Caribbean's focus on enhancing guest experiences through technological advancements and immersive travel, positioning the Discovery class as a key player in the future of cruising.
