Rhyl, often overlooked by visitors heading to Llandudno or Anglesey, offers a simple but rewarding seaside day out for families, especially those from Greater Manchester. The town boasts a large sandy beach, picturesque dunes, and a range of attractions, all within about a 90-minute drive from Manchester.
Recent Regeneration and Attractions
The town has undergone significant changes in recent years. Major sea defence works have been completed, the promenade has been raised and widened, and the SC2 water park has reopened. The Queen's Market has also opened, featuring independent food outlets, local traders, and pop-up events.
An £11 million revamp of the promenade road and town centre is underway, funded by the Local Regeneration Fund, according to North Wales Live.
Beach and Promenade
The main beach stretches for almost two miles from the Clwyd Estuary to Splash Point, providing ample space. It is tidal, so visitors should check tide times. The promenade behind the beach offers cafes, crazy golf, a family funfair, and arcades.
At the western end of the beach, SC2 offers an indoor waterpark, outdoor splash park, and soft play areas. Prices start from £11.50 for adults for one hour, £9 for children aged three to fifteen, £4.95 for under-threes, and £1.95 for under-ones.
Family-Friendly Activities
Rhyl's miniature railway, opened in May 1911, is Britain's oldest and takes passengers on a mile-long journey around Marine Lake. The station includes a small museum with hands-on exhibits. Train fares are £4 per adult, £3 for children aged two to fourteen, and free for under-twos. Marine Lake is popular for crabbing, so bringing a bucket is advised.
Across the River Clwyd in Kinmel Bay, Horton's Nose Nature Reserve and Kinmel Dunes Local Nature Reserve offer tranquil walks with sea views.
