Gewan Island, a man-made island in Doha, Qatar, has opened an outdoor promenade with air conditioning to combat the region's extreme summer temperatures, which often exceed 45°C and have hit 50°C in recent years. The 450-metre Crystal Walkway features giant tree-shaped sculptures that blast cold air through small holes, keeping the area at a comfortable 21-23°C.
The artificial 'forest' is capped with hexagonal designs covered in crystals, and solar panels on top help power the outdoor air conditioning. Ten tons of crystals were used in the construction, and mini fountains spray cold water to further cool the space. Underneath the walkway, crystals are arranged into artworks depicting polar landscapes and oceans.
This is not Doha's first outdoor air-conditioned attraction. According to Time Out Doha, other spots include Oxygen Park, which has chilled outdoor walkways, and 21 High Street, an outdoor mall with vented floors maintaining 20°C for shoppers. The island is part of an artificial archipelago connected to the mainland by motorway bridges.
While outdoor air conditioning may seem unusual to those from cooler climates, it reflects the adaptation to rising global temperatures. Nearby Pearl Island offers luxury residences, boutiques, and man-made beaches with five-star hotels.
