From rugged coastlines to sandy shores with turquoise waters, the United Kingdom boasts an array of stunning beaches, though many are known for their chilly seas. A recent comprehensive study has pinpointed the coastal locations with the warmest ocean temperatures, offering Britons valuable insights for planning their next seaside getaway during the sunnier months.
Cornish Hidden Gem Tops the List
Conducted by SIXT, the research measured sea temperatures around the UK, identifying Portloe on the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall as the nation's warmest coastal spot. This charming fishing village records an average annual sea temperature of 15.9 degrees Celsius, providing a significantly more pleasant experience for swimmers and paddlers compared to the UK's average of around 10C in winter.
Nestled within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Portloe overlooks dazzling turquoise waters and is surrounded by verdant rolling hills. At low tide, its beach features a small sandy shoreline, ideal for a gentle swim. Cornwall Live reports that this picturesque setting makes it a prime destination for those seeking warmer waters without venturing abroad.
East Sussex Contenders Follow Closely

This delightful town attracts numerous visitors annually with its charming cobblestone streets and Georgian architecture. The breathtaking sand dunes of Camber Sands have frequently served as a filming location for major blockbusters, including the 2014 hit The Theory of Everything, which charts the life of physicist Stephen Hawking.
Taking third spot is another East Sussex treasure – Hastings. This coastal town has steadily climbed the rankings lately, drawing visitors with its impressive selection of new hotels and restaurants. Boasting a mix of pebbles and golden sand, the beach offers sweeping views across the English Channel, where sea temperatures can reach as high as 15.1C.
