Pistyll Rhaeadr, the tallest waterfall in Wales, has been named one of the country's "Seven Wonders" and is remarkably easy to get to. Located in the Berwyn Mountains in Powys, the waterfall is formed by the Afon Disgynfa falling in three stages over a 240-foot cliff-face into the Afon Rhaeadr below.
Viral TikTok video showcases the waterfall
The breathtaking sight went viral on TikTok after a video of the waterfall was shared by Roy Taylor. His video featured no commentary and was simply shots of the waterfall set to music, but commenters were blown away. Many said they would love to visit the waterfall for themselves, while others who had been before described it as "perfect" and "beautiful", as they vowed to visit again in the future.
One person said: "I feel I missed a few gems while [I was] nearby [in] Llandudno." Another added: "So pretty!! Definitely adding to my list next time I'm in Wales." A third wrote: "Absolutely stunning."
Historical roots in a poem
Pistyll Rhaeadr is often nicknamed one of the "Seven Wonders of Wales", as it was mentioned in a poem of the same name believed to have been written in the late-18th century by an anonymous tourist to Wales. The poem describes the seven landmarks that the writer believed were must-see sights for visitors at the time.
It reads: "Pistyll Rhaeadr and Wrexham steeple, Snowdon's mountain without its people, Overton yew trees, St Winefride's well, Llangollen bridge and Gresford bells."
Easy access for visitors
Accessing Pistyll Rhaeadr isn't as difficult as you might think. Although you can't view it from the side of the road and will need to go on a walk to find it, you don't need to trek for hours through the mountains. The Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall walk is a short but rewarding one, taking around 30 minutes from the local car park near the waterfall. The terrain is not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, however, as there are some rocky inclines in some parts.
