UK passport holders are being urged to act before April 8 to avoid a heftier bill, as the cost of obtaining a passport is set to rise by 8%. The change means that for the first time, an adult online passport application will exceed £100.
The fee hike, announced by the Home Office, will take effect from April 8. Those who renew after this date will face the increased charge, making it more expensive to travel.
According to the government, the increase is designed to reduce reliance on funding from general taxation and to cover the costs of processing applications, consular support overseas, and border processing for British citizens.
Applicants are advised to apply well in advance of any travel plans. Standard online applications can be completed from the UK, and in 2025, 99.7% of such applications were processed within three weeks or less when no additional information was needed.
With the holiday season approaching, acting promptly could save travellers money. The advice comes as a reminder that failing to renew before the deadline will result in higher fees for those wishing to travel.
