Norwegian Luna Cruise Ship Review: A Celestial Voyage in the Caribbean

In an era where megaships are increasingly common, standing out requires something extraordinary. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has achieved this with its latest vessel, Norwegian Luna, which I had the pleasure of sailing on during its debut Caribbean voyage from PortMiami. This ship, the second in NCL's Prima Plus class and a sister to Norwegian Aqua, launched last year, offers a unique blend of artistry and adventure that feels truly out of this world.

Artistic Design and Unique Features

Norwegian Luna immediately captures attention with its beautifully designed hull, a departure from the typical logo placements of other cruise lines. The hull features a constellation-themed artwork by California street artist Elle, who also serves as the ship's godmother. This hand-painted masterpiece, with lilac clouds and waves, illustrates the connection between sea and sky, inviting passengers to search for their Zodiac signs.

Onboard, the lunar theme continues with a giant silver crescent sculpture on Ocean Boulevard, deck eight, providing a perfect selfie spot. An innovative selfie button takes photos and videos, including a cinematic zoom-out from the bridge, available for download via the NCL app for £3.75. This offers a convenient alternative to relying on fellow passengers or official photographers.

Flexible Dining and Relaxed Atmosphere

As a first-time NCL passenger, I appreciated the line's unique approach to cruising. There are no set dining times, formal nights, or strict dress codes, beyond ensuring swimwear is dry in the Surfside Cafe and Grill buffet. Despite the relaxed rules, passengers remained smart and presentable. The flexibility allowed my wife and me to enjoy dinner before or after shows, with confidence in securing a table across 17 dining venues.

Highlights included The Local Bar & Grill, a complimentary pub-style venue where the barbecue smoked chicken wings are highly recommended, and the Indulge Food Hall, where we ordered tapas-style dishes via iPad, ranging from nachos with avocado dip to juicy lamb shish bites.

Spectacular Shows and Entertainment

The onboard entertainment is a feast for the eyes, with the flagship performance, Elton: A Celebration of Elton John, perfectly aligning with the Luna theme. This show features camp and colourful costumes, hits like Your Song and Don't Go Breaking My Heart, and impressive production elements, including 12 pianos on stage and four performers depicting Elton's iconic looks.

Another new show, HIKO, offers a Cirque De Soleil-style experience with acrobats, lasers, and 3D effects, transforming the stage into an explosion of colour. These performances make for amazing evenings, but the ship is equally vibrant during the day.

Activities and Accommodation Options

At 156,300 gross tonnes with a capacity for 3,565 guests, Norwegian Luna is smaller than rivals like Royal Caribbean's Icon class ships, yet it never feels cramped. Gary Anslow, head of UK and Ireland for NCL, emphasized the ship's appeal to a wide age range, with accommodation options including the luxury Haven area, family suites, and solo cabins, catering to multi-generational travel trends.

We enjoyed the adults-only Vibe Beach Club, available with a day pass (around $250 or £185 per person for a week), featuring soft sunbeds and infinity hot tubs. For family fun, the Moon Climber assault course, Glow Court with neon-lit interactive games, and expanded GameZone arcade with classics like car racing kept us entertained. The ship's flow has been improved with stairs connecting Surfside Cafe to the Luna Midway activity area, which includes mini golf with destination-themed holes and the Bullseye bar with interactive darts.

Thrilling Slides and Rides

Adventure seekers will love the Slidecoaster, a waterslide-rollercoaster hybrid that swings riders around the ship in colourful tubes. My favourite was The Drop on deck 18, a dry slide with a suspenseful countdown and vertical drop over the ocean, rivaling any helter skelter. A walk-in dryer is available for those who get wet on the slides.

Norwegian Luna may not be the largest ship at sea, but it shines with a charming mix of serenity and spectacle, offering an unforgettable cruise experience.
