British Woman's Cause of Death Confirmed After Disappearance from Greek Beach

The cause of death of a British woman who vanished from a sunbed on a Greek beach has been confirmed as drowning, authorities have announced. Michele Bourda, 59, from Glasgow, disappeared on August 1 while on holiday in Kavala, Greece, with her husband Chris Bourda, 66.

Mr Bourda had fallen asleep on Ofrynio beach after a swim, and when he woke, his wife was gone. Her belongings were left behind. Approximately a month later, police discovered her body on the small, privately-owned island of Fidonisi, about 40km from the beach.

Forensic scientist Nikos Kifnidis confirmed that there were no other injuries and that drowning was the cause of death. The identification was aided by the tankini she was wearing, which was bought in the UK, and evidence of a previous chest operation.

Greek police have ruled out foul play, stating she almost certainly died as a result of drowning. Mr Bourda expressed devastation, noting that his wife had battled depression and anxiety. He also criticised the lack of police presence on the beach on the day she disappeared.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed it is supporting the family and is in contact with local authorities.
