Manchester United have announced the signing of goalkeeper Kit Margetson as part of an overhaul of their goalkeeping department. The 19-year-old former Swansea City player joins on a free transfer, though Swansea will receive a compensation fee for the Wales under-21 international, who had been at the club since under-15 level under the guidance of his father Martyn, formerly the Championship side's head of goalkeeping.
Margetson's background and arrival
Margetson spent last season on loan at Connah's Quay Nomads, where he made 34 appearances and kept 10 clean sheets. He made his debut for Wales under-21s against Belarus in March. The club, who have not announced the length of his contract, said in a statement: "Everyone at United would like to welcome Kit to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future."
Goalkeeping department changes
Margetson's arrival is the latest in a series of moves in the goalkeeping department at Old Trafford. United signed Wales international Karl Darlow from Leeds on a free transfer to provide back-up to Senne Lammens, who himself only arrived last year. Previous No.1 Andre Onana has been loaned back to Turkish side Trabzonspor, while Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek are also set to depart in the coming weeks.
Bayindir and Vitek exits greenlit
Michael Carrick has greenlit the departures of Bayindir and Vitek to create space in the first-team squad. Bayindir has struggled to make an impact over the past few seasons and is seeking a permanent move, having not returned to United following the World Cup. Vitek spent last season on loan with Bristol City in the Championship and made a real impression. United are understood to value the 22-year-old at £10 million and have received plenty of interest in his services. He started United's 5-0 pre-season win over Rosenborg but will be allowed to leave, with Lammens and Darlow installed as first and second choice and his value high after his Bristol City stint.
