Tiny European Capital Crowned Most Beautiful Beating Paris and Madrid
Luxembourg City Crowned Europe's Most Beautiful Capital

Luxembourg City has been crowned Europe's most beautiful capital, outperforming popular destinations such as Paris and Madrid, according to a study that analysed over three million Tripadvisor reviews across 46 European capitals. The study, conducted by Luxury France Tours, measured how often reviewers used words like “beautiful” or “stunning” in their write-ups.

The city, which attracts fewer than 1.5 million tourists annually, contrasts sharply with London’s 20 million and Paris’s 19 million visitors. Despite its smaller numbers, Luxembourg City scored highest with 18.15 percent of reviews mentioning “beautiful.”

Key Attractions in Luxembourg City

Luxembourg City boasts a UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town surrounded by dramatic cliffs and deep ravines. Visitors can explore the Chemin de la Corniche, an 800-metre walkway often called Europe’s most beautiful balcony, offering panoramic views of the city and the Alzette River valley.

The fairytale-style Palais Grand-Ducal, home of the Duke of Luxembourg, is open to the public during summer. Inside, ornate rooms feature chandeliers, ironwork, and gold accents. Another notable site is the Casemates du Bock, a 14-mile network of underground tunnels built from 1644 onward, used historically for defense and as bomb shelters during World War II.

Unique City Features

The city also offers the free Pfaffenthal Lift, a glass elevator that rises 197 feet to a covered walkway connecting Pescatore Park and the old town with the Pfaffenthal district, providing views across the Alzette valley. The Grund area, with its ivy-covered stone houses and cobblestone streets, is a favourite for its romantic vibe along the Alzette River.

According to the report, “Travelers often highlight its clean streets and strong mix of old and modern areas. Even though the capital is small, people seem to appreciate how easy it is to walk around.”
