Jet2, the UK's third-largest airline, has issued a crucial message to all passengers checking in luggage, urging extra caution ahead of their holidays. The airline emphasises one key tip to safeguard belongings and ensure a hassle-free journey.
Essential Luggage Labelling Advice
On its 'Top Tips before Travel' webpage, Jet2 highlights top baggage tips for a smooth journey. A primary recommendation is to label each piece of baggage with three vital pieces of information: your name, flight number, and phone number. This simple step can prevent mix-ups and aid in recovery if luggage is lost.
Collecting Your Bags with Care
Jet2 adds that passengers should take care when claiming baggage at their destination, as many suitcases look similar. It is best to always check the name on the baggage tag to avoid accidental swaps. Importantly, the airline stresses that any irregularities, such as damage or missing luggage, must be reported immediately at the airport.
Jet2 explains: "You must contact the Jet2.com team at the airport (or our handling agents) immediately if your baggage is damaged or has not arrived. Irregularities must be reported immediately as claims cannot be processed once you leave the airport. Staff will help you to complete a Property Irregularity Report Form."
Choosing the Right Suitcase
The airline also advises purchasing strong suitcases, cautioning that soft-sided cases and components like handles, wheels, and locks can be particularly vulnerable to damage. Jet2 notes: "Please ensure your baggage is strong and fit for purpose, to protect the contents and to withstand the normal baggage handling process."
Additional Travel Tips from Jet2
Jet2 provides further guidance to enhance passenger safety and compliance:
- Never pack cash, valuable items, perishable goods, important documents, or essential medications in checked baggage.
- Always carry cigarettes and tobacco in hand luggage.
- When purchasing alcohol, check current airport security restrictions on liquids in hand luggage. Glass or plastic bottles in hold baggage may break or split, causing damage to belongings, and are carried at your own risk.
- Secure baggage by ensuring all pockets and zips are fully closed, as security authorities in some countries may open bags without your presence for checks.
- At check-in, retain checked baggage receipts until all items are collected at the destination airport.
- Never carry unidentified items on behalf of others.
Understanding Airline Liability
Jet2.com notes that while it makes great efforts to handle luggage with care, its liability for loss, delay, or damage is limited. The airline does not accept liability for fragile, valuable, or perishable articles, or baggage packed in damaged or unsuitable containers. It also excludes responsibility for damage from fair wear and tear, unfit baggage, or replacement of 'designer' luggage. Jet2 strongly recommends that all customers have adequate travel insurance cover before their journey.
Foreign Office Travel Warning
In related travel advice, the Foreign Office has issued a warning online at GOV.UK, urging people to follow the latest travel information for British nationals affected by the situation in the Middle East. Passengers should check the advice for their destination regardless of their airline, with all foreign travel advice available via the GOV.UK website.
This comprehensive guidance from Jet2 aims to empower passengers with practical steps to protect their luggage and navigate potential issues, ensuring a smoother and more secure travel experience.
