Slot will be remembered for leading Liverpool to their 20th top-flight title in May 2025, but those glory days now seem distant. Twenty defeats across all competitions this season eroded fan trust, with Anfield turning from a bastion of power into a toxic environment of booing and groans.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool's decision to sack Slot was driven by a lack of identity on the pitch. Key players such as Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo and Alexis Mac Allister suffered alarming dips in form. The boos Slot faced after a draw with Chelsea earlier this month, coupled with growing discord, left him little room to manoeuvre. FSG's CEO of football Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes made the call after an end-of-season review.
Speaking before his sacking, club captain Virgil van Dijk demanded the team knuckle down to restore glory days. In the club's 'Walk On' magazine, he said: 'It is an opportunity for other players to step up... it has to happen and it will happen. It's just taking responsibility.'
