Skegness has been ranked the worst seaside town in the UK by Which? readers, scoring low on scenery, seafront, food and drink, and peace and quiet. The survey of 3,000 people placed the Lincolnshire resort at the bottom of the list, while Bamburgh in Northumberland topped it.
Critics have described Skegness as a 'vulgar hellhole', with The Telegraph calling its Butlin's 'the British Library of bad tattoos' and the Daily Mail bemoaning the rise of 'brash US-style bars'. However, the town has its defenders, who point to its affordability, unspoilt coastline, and clean water.
Skegness offers a day pass to Butlin's for £23, and nearby attractions include Grimsthorpe Castle, used in the latest series of Bridgerton, and Gibraltar Point nature reserve. Surfers Against Sewage rates the water quality as clean, unlike some beaches in Yorkshire, Kent, and Cornwall.
Despite the snobbery, Skegness remains a lively and vibrant destination for those seeking affordable fun by the sea.
