A mother of two from North Shields has described her terror after waking up with blue lips and fingers following a holiday in Egypt. Sarah Hislop, 35, was rushed to hospital in extreme pain, where doctors diagnosed a serious infection that had caused multiple organ failure.
Ms Hislop remains in hospital weeks later and is undergoing kidney dialysis. She says her kidneys were found to be “completely dead” and she is hoping a live donor will come forward to save her life.
She told Chronicle Live: “I went to bed one night about two weeks after a holiday to Egypt and woke up in the middle of the night as my lips had turned blue. The next morning my friend Amy came to sit with me because I was really unwell. My lips, fingertips and toes were so blue she rang for an ambulance.”
At the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, doctors found she had multiple organ failure due to a severe infection, the source of which remains unclear. Ms Hislop, who has two children aged 16 and 12, said: “I had gone to bed and within about four to five hours I was curled up in pain and we didn’t know what was wrong. I started blacking out. If Amy had not come round, my son could have found me dead in bed when he came home from school.”
Without a live kidney donor, Ms Hislop could face a wait of up to five years for a deceased donor. She has appealed on social media for potential donors to contact her transplant coordinator. She said: “For anyone who would kindly like to give me a kidney so I can live a longer life and watch my babies grow up, you just need to call this number and mention my name.”
