Spanish Town Águilas Named Europe's Premier Destination for Boat Trips
A little-known Spanish town has been declared Europe's best holiday hotspot for boat trips, according to new research. Águilas, located in southeastern Spain, might not be the first destination that British travellers consider, but it offers incredible coastal scenery with sandy beaches and coves that make it well worth a visit.
Research Highlights Top European Destinations
The analysis, conducted by CV Villas, evaluated factors such as wind speed, sunshine hours, water temperature, and the availability of boat trips. Águilas emerged victorious, surpassing renowned holiday spots from Biarritz in France to Cornwall in the UK. This lesser-visited tourist destination provides an escape from summer crowds, making it an attractive option for travellers seeking tranquility.
Águilas is part of the Costa Cálida, one of the lesser-explored Costas on Spain's southeastern coast. Situated in the province of Murcia, the town boasts a thriving seaport and easy access to the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean. Its stunning coastline, featuring long stretches of sand and tiny coves, contributed significantly to its top ranking.
Coastal Beauty and Nearby Attractions
Seven Spanish destinations made the top 20 list, with the nearby town of Mazarrón securing fourth place. Mazarrón is a must-visit for seafood enthusiasts, as its port hosts a fish market and numerous restaurants serving fresh ingredients. This area of Spain is rich in coastal beauty, offering diverse experiences for visitors.
As a port city, Águilas facilitates easy booking of boat trips or vessel hires for day excursions. Available options include:
- Glass-bottomed boat tours to observe marine life
- Scuba diving adventures
- Cave tours with safe spots for swimming and exploration
Notable beaches near Águilas include Playa de Poniente "la Colonia," a wide sandy beach with calm, clear waters ideal for swimming, and Playa de las Delicias, located next to Aguilica's peak with rugged clifftop views.
On-Land Activities and Historical Sites
Beyond the coast, Águilas offers a unique and colourful town experience. Visitors can stroll along the long promenade or explore the harbour area, both lined with bars and restaurants open until late. The town blends modern and traditional elements, with a variety of shops in the centre.
Key attractions include:
- Castillo San Juan de las Aguilas: A historic castle with panoramic sea views
- Plaza de España: A tree-lined town square exuding Mediterranean vibes
Other Notable European Destinations
The research also highlighted other lesser-known Spanish spots, such as Bermeo in the north, known for its whaling history, and Cadaqués on the Costa Brava, surrounded by greenery and hills. Europe's top 20 destinations for boat trips feature a mix of locations, showcasing the continent's diverse coastal offerings.
This analysis underscores the appeal of hidden gems like Águilas, providing travellers with new options for memorable holiday experiences.
