Geneva: An Underrated City Break Just Over an Hour from the UK

Geneva, a Swiss city just over an hour from London, offers far more than its reputation for luxury watches and high living costs. Nestled on the banks of Lake Geneva with the Alps as a backdrop, it combines historic streets, independent chocolatiers, and lakeside walks. Unlike Zurich, Geneva has a calmer, more unhurried feel, making it an attractive weekend escape that is easy to explore on foot.

A City of Landmarks and Lakeside Strolls

The city sits where the Rhône River flows out of Lake Geneva, with the iconic Jet d'Eau fountain shooting a towering column of water skyward. The waterfront is ideal for soaking up the scenery, with boats gliding across the lake and views towards the mountains. Visitors can happily meander around the lake, pop into cafés, browse shops, and admire the architecture without rushing between sights.

In the Old Town, known as La Vieille Ville, cobbled streets, charming squares, and independent boutiques fill the historic quarter perched on a hill above the city centre. The standout landmark is St Pierre Cathedral, dating back to the 12th century, where visitors can explore inside and, where access permits, climb the towers for panoramic views. The area also boasts the world's longest wooden bench, measuring 120 metres and constructed in 1767.

Chocolate, Fondue, and Historic Hotels

Geneva's Flower Clock, established in 1955 at the entrance to the Jardin Anglais, pays homage to the city's watchmaking heritage with thousands of plants and flowers. Switzerland's chocolate heritage is also well represented, with established chocolatiers and independent boutiques offering bars, truffles, and pralines. Notable names include Favanger, along with the Lindt shop in the city centre.

Cheese fondue is another Swiss staple worth trying. At Restaurant Les Armures in the Old Town, a traditional fondue is served with crunchy bread and potatoes, typically prepared with a blend of cheeses, white wine, and seasonings.

The Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues, established in 1834, overlooks Lake Geneva and combines historic splendour with modern five-star amenities. It sits in a prime city centre location, with the lakefront just beyond its doors and the Old Town and shopping districts easily accessible. The hotel features an indoor swimming pool, a fitness centre, and Spa Mont Blanc, with guest rooms overlooking the city, courtyard, and lake.

Dining and Nearby Day Trips

The Four Seasons houses several restaurants and bars, including II Lago, which specialises in Italian cuisine, and Izumi, which serves Japanese-inspired cuisine. While the hotel is positioned at the premium end of the spectrum, it offers a complete experience for those seeking a memorable stay.

A day excursion to Annecy, a town just over the French frontier, was a highlight of the journey. Reached by FlixBus from Geneva, Annecy is known for its waterways, historic structures, and a lake encircled by peaks. With lanes to explore, independent boutiques, and spots to pause for a crêpe or coffee, it offered a wonderful alternative to Geneva and was well worth dedicating a day to.
