Hundreds of holidaymakers were evacuated from Pontins in Brean, Somerset, on Tuesday evening following a suspected gas leak. Fire crews, including a specialist environmental unit, were called to the site at around 19:00 BST.
Two people were treated with oxygen therapy after they were believed to have been exposed to gases. However, firefighters in breathing apparatus who entered the plant room to take gas readings found no abnormal readings and no leaking chemicals.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident was a false alarm. A Pontins spokesman said: 'We can confirm that Pontins Brean Sands Holiday Park was evacuated yesterday evening as a precaution following a report of a suspected gas leak. This was confirmed by the fire service to be a false alarm and our guests were permitted to re-enter the park a short while later.'
One holidaymaker described the evacuation: 'We were in the bar, sat down, having a drink. Then they came in and told us to please get our belongings and move. All the shutters went down, and we went to the safety point. They were very organised.' Another guest noted: 'Everyone was panicking because they would not open the other gates.'
The park was reopened about an hour after the evacuation. This incident follows a structural issue in February when part of a ceiling beam collapsed in the main entertainment hall, though no serious injuries were reported.
