Adam Short, 44, his wife Tara, 38, and their two sons, Spencer, nine, and Xander, four, have relocated from Sheffield to Grand Baie in Mauritius. The family, who first visited the island in November 2024, decided to rent out their four-bedroom UK home and move with just five suitcases.
Adam described their UK life as 'dreary' and 'like existing together'. He said: 'Back in the UK, we weren't being a proper family. We were desperate to get away from the rat race.' The couple, who run their own businesses, now work fewer hours but say they are more productive, thanks to the time difference and flexible schedules.
While living costs are similar, the family believes they get better value for money. A weekly grocery shop costs around £200, plus £20 for fresh produce at local markets. Dining at local Creole restaurants is affordable, with a meal including wine for about £40, whereas tourist spots charge £100–£120. Adam noted that street food like rotis costs about 20p each.
The children attend an international private school costing £5,000 a year. The family enjoy a 'permanent holiday' lifestyle with afternoons at the beach and strong community bonds. Adam said: 'Everyone is so lovely – we've been invited to a Mauritian family's home this weekend.'
The Shorts have made a two-year pact to reassess the move, but already feel settled. Adam added: 'It's achievable if you just commit to it.'
