New EU Travel Rules Post-Brexit: What UK Travellers Need to Know About ETIAS
EU’s ETIAS: New Travel Rules for UK Post-Brexit

UK travellers will soon face new entry requirements when visiting EU countries, as the European Union prepares to launch its ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) in 2025. This post-Brexit change means British citizens will no longer enjoy unrestricted access to the Schengen Zone and must register online before departure.

What Is ETIAS and How Does It Work?

ETIAS is a digital pre-screening system designed to enhance border security across the EU. Similar to the US ESTA programme, it requires travellers from visa-exempt countries—including the UK—to obtain authorisation before entering the Schengen Area.

Key Details:

  • Cost: €7 per application (free for under-18s and over-70s).
  • Validity: Three years or until passport expiry.
  • Processing Time: Usually within minutes, but may take up to 30 days.

Who Needs ETIAS?

All UK passport holders travelling for short stays (up to 90 days) in any of the 30 Schengen countries must apply. This includes tourists, business travellers, and those transiting through the EU.

Exemptions:

  • Residents of EU/Schengen countries.
  • Travellers with long-stay visas or residence permits.

What Does This Mean for UK Travellers?

While ETIAS isn’t a visa, it adds an extra step to trip planning. The system is expected to launch in mid-2025, with a six-month grace period for compliance. After this, travellers without approval may be denied boarding or entry.

The EU emphasises that ETIAS aims to streamline border checks and improve security, but critics argue it creates additional bureaucracy for British visitors post-Brexit.
