SV Elversberg marked their Bundesliga debut with a stunning 3-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, the 2024 champions, on Saturday afternoon. The win, described as a "moon landing" by coach Vincent Wagner before the game, proved that German football still has room for surprise and wonder beyond the title race.
A Miracle Village's Top-Flight Debut
Elversberg represent Spiesen-Elversberg, a town of just over 13,000 people, 15km north-east of Saarbrücken and 30 minutes' drive from the French border. The Ursapharm Arena, currently undergoing renovation to reach a modest 15,000 capacity, was filled with locals who saw their team lead 3-0 within the first 10 minutes, thanks to two goals in 60 seconds, and a third 25 seconds after half-time.
New Leverkusen coach Carles Martínez threw on forwards to salvage the game, with Patrick Schick and Christian Kofané scoring to reduce the deficit, but it wasn't enough. This was the first Bundesliga win for a team from Saarland since 1993, when FC Saarbrücken beat Leverkusen. Wagner had said staying up would be their "mission to Mars" after arriving in the division.
Leverkusen Rattled from the Start
Leverkusen were shaken from minute one, with new captain Edmund Tapsoba looking more like a debutant as Lukas Petkov opened the scoring and then turned over the ball, allowing Cole Campbell to sweep in a quickfire second. Petkov, who scored 13 and created six in the promotion campaign, also set up David Mokwa's goal at the start of the second half with a delivery from the right.
Campbell, bought from Borussia Dortmund for €6m in the summer, started like a man on a mission. Elversberg's record fee for the 20-year-old from Houston needs to work, and this performance was a promising start.
Spend and Context
Leverkusen's spending is notable: when Strasbourg full-back Guéla Doué completes his move on Monday, it will be the fourth time this summer they have spent over €20m on a player. Despite an encouraging pre-season, they were beset by old problems that undercut their Champions League hopes last season. Goalkeeper Mark Flekken told the media: "I can't even offer an explanation right now."
On the other side, Elversberg's goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof, whose stoppage-time save from Jonas Hofmann shut down Leverkusen's last hope, has been at the club since they were in the regional fourth tier, winning promotion to the 3.Liga in 2022. It is already a fairytale, and if they can build on their start as they build their main stand, it would be a story for the Bundesliga ages.
