The Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Index has named Copenhagen the world's most liveable city for the second consecutive year. The Danish capital earned perfect scores in stability, education and infrastructure, alongside one of the highest culture and environment scores among the 173 cities assessed.
Residents highlight the seamless integration of lifestyle and city design. 'You can bike to work, jump in the harbour after and be home for dinner. It's not a special day, it's just Tuesday,' said Laura Amira Kassem, a long-time resident. She recommends exploring the culturally diverse Nørrebro district and cycling to Nordhavn for a swim and coffee.
Vienna claimed second place with perfect scores in healthcare and education. Locals appreciate the ease of travel along the Ringstraße by tram, with resident Franziska Hochmüller noting that 'time just runs different in Vienna.' Roland Eggenhofer suggests visitors explore the 6th and 7th districts for their relaxed cafe culture and traditional Heuriger wine taverns.
Melbourne ranked third, achieving one of the highest culture and environment scores. 'Melbourne is a big city that somehow behaves like a village,' said Anne Marie Lennon, general manager of th. Its distinct neighbourhoods offer diverse experiences, from laneway cafes to cultural festivals.
The top five was completed by Sydney and Zurich. The index's stability, healthcare, culture, education and infrastructure criteria reflect both Europe's enduring dominance and Australia's continued strong performance in offering high quality of life.
