East Wittering, a seaside village on the Manhood Peninsula in West Sussex, remains a compelling destination in autumn, despite the end of summer. Locals affectionately call it 'God's pocket' owing to its mild microclimate, which brings warmer, sunnier weather than the surrounding towns. Even when it is too chilly for a swim, the village offers a bustling high street filled with independent shops, cafés and pubs.
A beach for all seasons
While East Wittering draws crowds during summer, it is equally charming in the cooler months. Visitors can stroll along the pebbled beach and, at low tide, wander out across the exposed stretches of soft golden sand. After taking in ocean views and fresh sea air, the town centre invites exploration.
Mornings can begin with a coffee from Ground, located just a stone's throw from the beach on Shore Street, before heading to The Boulevard for a sit-down breakfast.
Independent shops and local crafts
One of East Wittering's greatest draws is its remarkable array of independent shops. From vintage clothing and fashion at Let's Go Back to locally handcrafted art and jewellery at The Artisan Shoppe, there is something to suit every taste. For outdoor enthusiasts, Wittering Surf Shop is available, while art lovers can visit V. A Design Studios, run by local artist Victoria, which stocks everything from large-scale paintings to hand-drawn cards.
Pubs with character
No weekend browse would be complete without a swift pint, and East Wittering has plenty of options. The Shore Inn, tucked beside the main beach entrance, is a firm favourite. It is bustling, dog friendly and boasts outdoor seating for enjoying early autumn sunshine, along with regularly live music.
Slightly further afield in West Wittering, roughly a 10-minute drive away, sits The Lamb Inn, an 18th-century country pub brimming with character and featuring a gorgeous beer garden.
