Small can be beautiful, and that applies to ski resorts. For families seeking a quieter winter break during February half-term or Easter 2025, lesser-known resorts offer charm without the crowds. While some resorts are completely contained, others serve as a quieter gateway to larger ski domains, giving the best of both worlds.
Ruka, near the Russian border in Finland, is a winter wonderland with just 19km of slopes but plenty of snow and log cabin charm. It celebrates its 70th anniversary this season, offering cross-country skiing, dog-sledding, and reindeer sleigh rides. Iglu Ski has an Easter break at Ruka Village Ski-Inn Hotel from 17 April, with self-catering from £849pp excluding flights.
In Slovakia, Jasna in the Tatra Mountains has 50km of slopes but packs in variety, from easy pistes to World Cup black runs and a freeride area. Jasna Adventures’ Dragon’s Lair chalet offers half-board from 15 February at €741pp including ski hire. Le Grand-Bornand in France’s Aravis Mountains combines rustic Savoyard ambience with 90km of slopes and cheese farms. Baqueira Beret in the Spanish Pyrenees offers 160km of pistes across three areas, suitable for all levels. SNO has a week’s half-board at Hotel MIM Baqueira from 16 February, from £1,879pp including flights and transfers. Alpbach in Austria, often on lists of prettiest villages, sits within Ski Juwel’s 128km of slopes and has a 5km toboggan run. Crystal Ski offers seven nights’ B&B at Pension Fürstenhof from 15 February, from £2,048pp including flights and transfers.
Deals for February half-term are disappearing rapidly, and Easter is late this year, so booking early is advised. These lesser-known resorts provide a peaceful alternative to crowded slopes, with something for every ability and plenty of non-skiing activities.
