The desperate search for a missing British backpacker in the unforgiving Australian outback has entered a critical phase, with his family making an emotional plea for help. Oliver Pugh, 25, from Cheltenham, was last seen over a week ago in remote Queensland, sparking a massive land and air operation.
Mr. Pugh was last captured on CCTV at a roadhouse in Mount Isa, approximately 1,800km northwest of Brisbane, on Tuesday, 18th June. Concerns are mounting as he was travelling alone to meet friends in the coastal town of Townsville, a journey he never completed.
Family's Heartbreaking Plea
In a statement released through Queensland Police, Oliver's family articulated their anguish. "We are desperately worried about Oliver and just want him to be found safe and well," they said. The family is being supported by the Foreign Office during this harrowing time.
Search Focuses on Harsh Terrain
Authorities are concentrating their efforts along the vast and isolated stretch of road between Mount Isa and Townsville. The terrain is notoriously harsh, and searchers are battling extreme temperatures that plummet at night and soar during the day.
Police have confirmed they hold "serious concerns" for Oliver's welfare, given the challenging environment and the length of time he has been missing without contact.
Appeal for Public Assistance
Queensland Police have issued a public appeal for information. They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen Oliver, his blue Nissan X-Trail with the registration 966 WKB, or who has any dashcam footage from the Landsborough Highway between June 18th and 19th.
Oliver is described as a Caucasian man, about 178cm tall, with a slim build, brown hair, and a beard. His disappearance is entirely out of character, adding to the alarm of his loved ones.
