Cruise Expert Reveals Hidden Dangers in Popular Port Destinations

While cruises are typically associated with luxury, relaxation, and endless amenities, travel expert Jason has exposed a serious hidden danger that many vacationers overlook. In a recent episode of his podcast, The Travel Scouts, which he hosts with his wife Kellie, Jason revealed that numerous cruise ports are situated in cities with alarmingly high crime rates.

The Overlooked Threat in Paradise Ports

Jason explained that travelers often mistakenly assume they're safe when disembarking at various island destinations. However, he warned that many ports are located in areas plagued by violent crime, kidnapping, and even murder. "Anytime you're cruising to a new destination, it's crucial to understand the danger levels and know what to watch for," he emphasized. "Some ports can be quite sketchy if you're unaware and venture into the wrong areas."

After studying crime statistics and government travel warnings, Jason compiled a comprehensive list of the world's most dangerous cruise ports that every traveler should approach with caution.

Belize City: Level Three Advisory

First on Jason's warning list is Belize City in Belize, which currently carries a US State Department Level Three travel advisory. The department specifically advises tourists to "reconsider travel" to the city's southside due to rampant violent crime connected to gang activity. Crimes in this area include sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder.

Jason, who has visited Belize City multiple times, described it as a "very sketchy area." He recommended staying within the secure port area for shopping and browsing, and strongly advised against wandering into the city independently. "You'll be absolutely fine in the port area, but it's not advised to explore Belize City on your own," he stressed, suggesting travelers book excursions exclusively through their cruise line rather than third-party operators.

Trinidad and Tobago: State of Emergency Concerns

The island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, located near Venezuela's coast, also requires heightened vigilance. Jason noted that the local government declared a state of emergency for much of the past year due to violence and organized crime. The US State Department has issued a Level Three advisory for the country, citing serious crime risks, terrorism threats, and kidnapping dangers.

"Trinidad and Tobago can be a dangerous place," Jason cautioned. "If your cruise stops here, be aware and take appropriate precautions when planning your time ashore."

Jamaican Ports: High-Risk Areas

Jamaica features five cruise ports, but Jason identified two particularly dangerous locations: Kingston and Montego Bay. The US State Department has issued Level Four "do not travel" advisories for parts of both cities. "If your cruise visits either of these ports, be aware and avoid taking taxis to explore solo," Jason advised. "Your best options are staying in the secure port area or booking excursions through the cruise line or reputable companies."

Mexican Ports: Cartel Violence Threats

While Mexico remains a popular cruise destination with over twenty active ports, Jason highlighted three particularly risky locations on the country's west coast: Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, and Manzanillo. All three appear on US State Department maps with Level Three or Four travel advisories.

"This year we've already seen extreme violence as Mexican cartels clashed with law enforcement in Puerto Vallarta," Jason reported. "This led to canceled cruise stops and tourists sheltering in place at land-based resorts. Always be alert when traveling, but exercise extra consideration at these ports."

Haiti: Most Unsafe Caribbean Destination

Haiti carries a US State Department Level Four "do not travel" advisory due to kidnapping, crime, terrorist activity, civil unrest, and limited healthcare. Jason noted that Royal Caribbean has paused visits to its private Labadee port since September due to escalating crime.

"Haiti has been plagued by unrest and intense gang violence," Jason explained. "Royal Caribbean canceled all Labadee stops for the entire year. Recently, gangs even attacked US Marines guarding the embassy. If they're willing to do that, they'd have no problem with cruise line security. Haiti could be considered the most unsafe destination in the entire Caribbean."

Colombia and Guatemala: Additional Warnings

Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, requires particular vigilance according to Jason. The US State Department has issued a Level Three advisory for Colombia due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, and natural disasters. "When visiting Colombia, be aware of your surroundings, stay in groups, and don't wander off alone," Jason recommended.

Guatemala's growing popularity as a cruise destination comes with significant warnings. The country's two primary ports—Puerto Quetzal and Santo Tomás de Castilla—are visited by more than a dozen cruise lines, but Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to many areas due to violent crime, while the US maintains a Level Three advisory.

"Guatemala is a beautiful country," Jason acknowledged. "Enjoy it, but be aware, stay safe, and plan appropriately when you go."

Jason's comprehensive analysis serves as a crucial reminder that behind the luxury and relaxation of cruising lies the need for informed safety precautions at potentially dangerous port destinations worldwide.
