De Vere Cranage Estate in Holmes Chapel, less than an hour from Greater Manchester, offers a romantic countryside break with a Grade II-listed mansion house, a luxury suite, and unexpected nods to Jodrell Bank Observatory.
Bethan Finighan, a guest at the hotel in September, found that the recently refurbished estate made a fantastic first impression, with its grand mansion and sweeping driveway leading to a striking red brick and yellow sandstone exterior. The hotel also hosts weddings.
Luxury Suite and Dining
Finighan stayed in the Byley Suite, named after a nearby Cheshire village just a few miles from Jodrell Bank Observatory. The suite felt more like a luxury apartment than a standard hotel bedroom, featuring a separate lounge, a spacious bedroom, a dedicated dressing room, and a bathroom with a whirlpool bath.
The lounge included a coffee machine and a record player. The hotel left a selection of welcome snacks, and Finighan and her partner played The Sound of Music on vinyl and danced around the room.
Dinner was at the Tempus Bar & Restaurant, which manages to feel both spacious and cosy. The menu featured seasonal produce and local ingredients, with starters ranging from £6.50 to £10, mains from £22 to £38, and desserts from £9 to £11.
The meal began with torched burrata and warm focaccia. The short rib pappardelle and a steak followed, both rich, comforting, and generously portioned, paired with a bottle of cabernet sauvignon.
Science Heritage and Breakfast
An unexpected highlight was the subtle tributes to Jodrell Bank Observatory throughout the hotel's interiors. Artwork depicting the iconic Lovell Telescope, astronomy-inspired ornaments, and the aptly-named Lovell Suite offered a reminder of the scientific heritage on the estate's doorstep.
With Jodrell Bank facing uncertainty following funding cuts announced over the summer, those details felt particularly meaningful, a reminder of what Cheshire has to be proud of, from its countryside to its scientific achievements.
Breakfast at Tempus offered a cooked buffet with sausage, bacon, eggs, and beans. Afterward, Finighan explored nearby Knutsford, with its independent shops and cosy cafes. A visit to Tatton Park was not possible due to time, but there was no pressure to cram in attractions.
Standard rooms at De Vere Cranage Estate start from £110, Family and Deluxe rooms from £145, and Suites from £275, all including breakfast. The drive from Manchester to Holmes Chapel is approximately 27 miles and typically takes around 38 to 45 minutes. The hotel is on Byley Lane, Holmes Chapel, CW4 8EW.
