Content creator Just Deano recently undertook an overnight stay at the Golden Fleece in York, a historic establishment frequently labelled as Britain's most haunted pub. While the spectral reputation failed to materialise during his visit, Deano was thoroughly impressed by the accommodation and, particularly, the value for money, especially regarding the breakfast offering.
The Historic and Haunted Setting
The Golden Fleece, dating back to 1503, is situated in the heart of York, a city once declared the "most haunted city in Europe" by the International Ghost Research Foundation. The pub's walls bear the claim 'as seen on TV's most haunted,' a testament to its paranormal pedigree. Deano, filming for his YouTube channel, admitted personal scepticism about ghosts but noted his companion Naomi was terrified by the prospect.
Several spirits are reputed to haunt the premises, available for overnight bookings. Among the alleged apparitions are One Eyed Jack, reportedly seen in the bottom bar wearing a red coat, and a small child ghost purportedly lurking near the entrance. Deano checked into the Shambles Room, describing the bathroom as "very very nice but also very very terrifying," despite his disbelief in poltergeists.
A Peaceful Night and a Priceless Breakfast
After a night in the creaking old inn, Deano reported no supernatural occurrences. "Apart from Naomi having a weird dream, nothing in particular really happened," he said. He concluded the room was simply "a nice hotel room" with no ghostly footsteps heard.
The true highlight of the stay emerged the next morning with the full English breakfast. Priced at just £8, Deano described it as "exceptional value," noting the average cost for breakfast in York typically ranges from £10 to £15. The meal included two Cumberland sausages, streaky bacon, a choice of eggs, two hash browns, baked beans, a grilled flat mushroom, grilled tomato, and toasted bread with butter.
As a regular food reviewer, Deano was effusive in his praise. He declared the sausages "fantastic" and was particularly enamoured with the hash browns. "Oh wow. That's one of the best hashbrowns I've ever had. It's crispy, obviously deep fried. Beautiful onion taste to it. Wow. Them hashbrowns are phenomenal. Oh my god. I am in love," he gushed.
Revealing the Total Cost and Overall Verdict
Deano finally disclosed that the total cost for one night's stay for two people, including breakfast, was £116.10. He calculated that the room alone would likely be under £100 once the breakfast price was subtracted. He also highlighted that the Golden Fleece welcomes non-guests for breakfast, making a visit worthwhile even without an overnight stay.
Reflecting on the experience, Deano remarked, "I've enjoyed it. Naomi has loved staying here. She was a bit scared last night of course, but it's a really really lovely room." He praised the old-fashioned decor, including a red suede sofa and large paintings, stating, "It's very old fashioned, but it suits it... I'd definitely stay again."
Following the video's posting, viewers echoed his sentiments on value. One commented, "That's really a decent price for the room!" Another stated, "As a one-off adventure that was damn good value and the breakfast may not have been perfect, it really did look decent for the price."
While Deano's stay was ghost-free, some TripAdvisor reviewers report contrasting experiences. One individual posted, "I'm telling you now I have experienced something at this pub! Gave me scooby doo legs, I was GONE!!!" Another succinctly noted, "There are plenty of spirits in the bar," perhaps referring to both the supernatural and the alcoholic varieties.
