Inside the Chocolate Hotel Suite Near the UK: The Surprising Truth
A hidden gem, just an hour from the UK, offers a hotel suite entirely draped in chocolate. This extraordinary accommodation is not for sale, but rather a reward for kindness, created through a partnership between Tony's Chocolonely and The Social Hub in Amsterdam. As the first guest to experience it, I discovered a world where chocolate is more than a treat—it's a catalyst for connection and change.
A Sweet Arrival and Themed Spaces
Entering through grand red curtains, I was greeted by a personal bartender who crafted a decadent Salted Caramel Espresso Martini. The suite unfolded into three distinct areas: a vibrant red room symbolising community, a secluded blue room for self-reflection, and an upstairs monochrome space dedicated to gratitude. Each area was meticulously designed with its own theme and purpose, blending indulgence with introspection.
The red room featured a fully equipped kitchen, including a hob, coffee maker, and a create-your-own ice-cream sundae station. Cabinets overflowed with chocolate, and every guest receives a shelf of treats to share. Inspirational messages about kindness adorned the walls, and a chocolate Jenga game with thought-provoking questions encouraged interaction. This space was not just about consumption but about fostering togetherness.
Unexpected Moments of Reflection
In the blue room, a fortune slot machine required tokens found throughout the suite to operate, dispensing chocolates and self-reflective queries. When my brother joined, he was asked, "What's one belief you have changed your mind about?" His response—"That I'm not good enough"—revealed a vulnerability I hadn't anticipated, highlighting how the environment prompted genuine, heartfelt conversations.
The black-and-white room allowed visitors to leave messages of kindness for future guests or the team. Charlie Ayres, head of brand at The Social Hub, emphasised, "We wanted every part of the room to spark togetherness and encourage kindness, using chocolate to create opportunities to share, interact and above all, be sweet to one another." This experience was crafted to celebrate kindness while addressing deeper societal issues.
A Night in the Enchanting Red Room
Staying overnight in the red room, I was enveloped by a nutty, creamy chocolate aroma that permeated the space. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, though the large room felt slightly cool due to air conditioning without heating. Ample blankets provided warmth, and a minor issue with the television encouraged continued conversation with my brother, reinforcing the theme of human connection.
Waking refreshed, we enjoyed a delicious sundae and received a heartwarming wake-up call urging us to spread kindness. My brother reflected, "Sweetness and warmth even down to the scent wafting throughout the rooms. Thought and caring touches sprinkled throughout promoting mindfulness and a reminder that peace doesn't happen in a vacuum." The suite was a sanctuary of comfort and contemplation.
The Deeper Message Behind the Chocolate
This limited-time experience, available for three days with public viewings on March 29, aims to inspire kindness in a divided world. Trix van der Vleuten, chief marketing officer at The Social Hub, noted, "We're more digitally connected than ever, yet loneliness is rising. We wanted to showcase that sweetness, simple, human kindness, matters more than ever." The partnership seeks to remind people that small acts of generosity can have a profound impact.
Beyond the joy, Tony's Chocolonely uses this initiative to highlight its commitment to ethical cocoa production. Sadira E. Furlow, head of global brand and communications, stated that the brand aims to eradicate exploitation in the chocolate industry by supporting around 40,000 cocoa farmers in achieving sustainable incomes. This suite is a testament to how indulgence can align with social responsibility.
The Social Hub, with locations in Glasgow, Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome, continues to promote meaningful travel experiences. This chocolate-themed suite serves as a powerful reminder that kindness and ethical choices can sweeten our world in more ways than one.
