Brits Embrace Short-Term Relocations Abroad as Trial Run Before Permanent Move
Brits Opt for Short-Term Relocations Abroad as Trial Run

While the prospect of permanently moving abroad captivates many Brits, the practical challenges—from navigating complex visa regulations to managing living expenses and deciding what possessions to bring—can make it an intimidating endeavour. Consequently, an increasing number of individuals are turning to short-term relocations as a low-risk method to sample life in a new country before making a long-term commitment.

Surge in Interest for Temporary Moves

Interest in temporary relocation has skyrocketed over the past year, with Brits conducting 834,700 searches related to short-term moves abroad. Notably, three-quarters of UK residents aged 18 to 30 express openness to temporarily living and working overseas. A 2024 study on expat sentiment highlights that practical considerations are paramount in planning such moves.

Key Factors Influencing Decisions

Maintaining connections with friends and family is a top priority for 36% of respondents. Other significant factors include financial concerns (32%), language barriers (29%), and fears of regretting the decision (21%). By trialling life abroad with these supports in place, prospective expats can explore new opportunities overseas while having the safety net of a predetermined end date.

Top Countries for Trial Relocations

A recent study has identified ten global destinations that simplify the process for Brits to test life abroad. The analysis ranked nations based on criteria such as visa accessibility, minimum monthly wage requirements, average monthly rent costs, visa fees, and estimated monthly living expenses for a single person.

Japan Leads the Rankings

Japan claims the top spot, distinguished as the only country offering a free 12-month visa to UK nationals. In addition to the cost-free visa, it features a low minimum income requirement of £417, below-average living costs of £623.30 per month, and swift visa processing times of up to two weeks. Interest in Japan is growing steadily, with searches for 'Japan working holiday visa' increasing by 30% in the past month.

South Korea and Serbia Follow

East Asia dominates the upper echelons of the list, with South Korea securing second place. It presents one of the lowest barriers to trial relocation, requiring a minimal monthly wage of just £146 and a £50 application fee, alongside a two-week visa processing period. Serbia ranks third as the highest-placed European destination, appealing due to its proximity to the UK, low living costs of £536 per month, and average city-centre rents under £400.

Remaining Top Destinations

The study also highlights seven other countries that facilitate trial relocations for Brits: Turkey, New Zealand, Mexico, South Africa, Slovenia, Hungary, and Malaysia. Low living costs appear to be a decisive factor, with nations like Turkey and Malaysia offering monthly expenses well below the average.

Expert Insights on the Trend

Mike Harvey, managing director of 1st Move International, which conducted the research, commented: 'For many Brits considering a move overseas, trialling life abroad first offers a practical way to explore a new country without the pressure of a permanent commitment. Whether they are taking an extended holiday to explore the country, its landscape, culture and people, or working abroad as a digital nomad.'

He added: 'Living abroad for a shorter period of time can help people understand day-to-day costs, housing, healthcare and lifestyle, while reducing the financial and emotional risks often associated with relocation. If they find the shorter stay in a country enjoyable, it often leads to a permanent move.'
