A family holidaying in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, has alleged that two British men tipped a 53-year-old mother off her sunbed and pushed her daughters, escalating the ongoing 'sunbed wars' into physical violence. The incident occurred at an unnamed hotel, prompting the Spanish Civil Guard to intervene.
The mother, who does not speak English, was sitting on an empty lounger when two British men, aged 60 and 30, allegedly insulted her and claimed she had taken their spot. The older man is accused of overturning the sunbed, causing it to fall on the woman's foot, before pushing her daughters, aged 18 and 22.
The woman's husband, who was napping at the time, said other guests criticised the men's behaviour. He told local newspaper Diario de Avisos: 'I went down and two seconds later the Civil Guard arrived, which separated everyone.' The family said they were afraid and requested a transfer to a different hotel.
The family plans to file an official complaint upon returning to their home in Albacete, Spain, and will seek a medical report for the mother, who is experiencing ankle and back pain. The incident highlights the intense competition for sunbeds in Mediterranean hotspots, where tourists have been reserving loungers with towels as early as dawn.
