Two British men have died after jumping into a swimming pool at a hotel in Albufeira, Portugal, early this morning. The victims, aged 27 and 29, were found at the bottom of the pool around 4am local time. Emergency services attempted resuscitation but both were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, the men had been drinking and did not know how to swim. Police have stated there is no suspicion of foul play. At least one local report indicates both men were British and on holiday with friends.
The Foreign Office has been approached for comment, and Portuguese police could not be reached for an official statement. This incident follows a series of deaths involving British tourists in the Albufeira area, including the discovery of Greg Monks' body last month and a 21-year-old Briton found dead near the Old Town.
Earlier this year, town hall officials in Albufeira introduced fines of up to €4,000 for breaches of a new behaviour code, targeting rowdy holidaymakers. Penalties include fines for entering bars without a shirt and for public urination.
